Priority Threat Management Approach
-
We used a Priority Threat Management approach to guide resource allocation decisions for the conservation of biodiversity in Maui Nui.
-
~100 species experts and managers participated in a series of workshops to identify: (1) 374 species across 17 species groups of conservation concern across Maui Nui; (2) key threats to those species; (3) management strategies to address key threats; and (4) feasibility and costs of management strategies; (5) expected benefits of management strategies to each species group.
-
Elicited data were analyzed to identify cost-efficient strategies that would provide optimal gains in species persistence, and the total costs of preventing extinction.

Species Persistence
-
Without management actions, 15 out of 17 species groups are predicted to have <30% chance of persisting in the next 20 years.
-
Under current management actions probability of persistence is predicted to be between 11-44% for all species groups, with 11 species groups predicted to still have <30% chance of persistence.
-
If all management strategies are implemented in Maui Nui over the next 20 years, all species groups (374 species) are predicted to have at least a 40% chance of persistence with 11 species groups predicted to reach a 60% or greater.

Gains in Persistence from Management Strategies
